Olympic weightlifting is one of the world's oldest sports that combines strength, speed and flexibility. This style of training is designed to develop power through total body strength, muscular balance and agility. Olympic weightlifting trains an athlete's explosive capabilities by increasing the strength of the neurological signals to the muscles creating greater synchronization between muscle fibers. Exercises such as the clean and jerk as well as the snatch are effective for enhancing the capability to produce extreme accelerations against intense resistance.
Lifters perform two types of lifts - the snatch and the clean and jerk. In the snatch, they lift the bar to arm's length above their head in one movement. In the clean and jerk, they lift the bar to their shoulders, stand up straight, then jerk the bar to arm's length above their head. (Olympic Movement)
Both the Snatch and the Clean and Jerk require tremendous strength, speed, flexibility and balance all in one movement. These actions are what make Olympic weightlifting different and much more challenging. Twelve of the body's major muscles groups are targeted, as well as numerous stabilizing muscles in one explosive workout.
